Introduction

Morehouse MacDonald and Associates, Inc. (MMA), was founded in 1958 by Richard Morehouse, AIA. In 1988 John S. MacDonald, AIA, became a partner and has led the firm from a three person office to a dynamic 8 person design-oriented practice.

MMA is committed to providing the highest quality architectural services and provides full architecture, master site planning, building site analysis, and programming services for clients in the private and public sectors. MMA specializes in residential and interior architecture with a particular focus on custom single-family homes. From our Boston-area office we operate nationally, and internationally, for select clients and bring an informed perspective to local and regional issues.

MMA’s distinguished and growing body of work has earned the firm recognition as one of the Boston area’s most respected residential design firms. The firm regularly collaborates with some of the nation’s leading interior designers and decorators.

MMA has been published in Architectural Digest, Metropolitan Home, Trends Magazine, Better Homes & Gardens, Boston Magazine, Boston Common, Cape Cod & Islands, Newport Life, House Beautiful, and has been featured on HGTV.

Design Philosophy

We live in a time when our lives are challenged by exponential change and social impatience. Yet, at Morehouse MacDonald, our work is guided by enduring and classic principles of design. We take the time with each client to understand the intimate circumstances of their project: environment, site, program, budget, identity, and personal dream.

It is our belief that exceptional architecture is a direct result of a patient search for truth and beauty. We analyze sites for their natural and emotive power, draw upon the sensuality and richness of materials, and explore the varied interplay between the man-made and the natural. We use intellect and intuition to address the matrix of circumstances and requirements that govern each project’s success. And we do this with a focus dedicated to the craft of building, the art of listening, and the social responsibility that comes with the gift of Architecture.

What we enjoy most—and presumably do best—is craft our client’s dreams by listening, understanding, and by reflecting their aspirations and identity in a singularly unique and special style.
